LIFE Presentation and Ramadan Festivities11:14 AM PDT, October 29, 2007
My presentation to LIFE at Mira Costa College on October 12 went well. "Many thanks for your expert talk on Ibn al-Haytham," wrote Claude Alverson, the member of the curriculum committee who introduced me at the event. He continued:
As I am sure you could tell from the audience—and their many questions—you were a great hit with our membership! It was great to see you in action and I admire your presentation and audience-engagement skills. Thanks so much for the time you put into the PowerPoint production and, of course, writing the fine copy that was so intelligible for everyone. It must not be an easy task for a book’s writer to reduce its content to 6-7 pages! We’ll have to see if we can arrange a return appearance for sometime next year!
I sold eight books at the event, six to a delightful woman named Rhea Amid, who bought them as Ramadan gifts for friends and family. At her request, I inscribed the books with “Happy Ramadan!”—a first in my career. Later, she wrote back:
My family was absolutely thrilled to receive your book, so appropriate for the Ramadan Holiday Celebration. Also, the fact that you took the time and trouble to autograph each one to the respective family was genuinely appreciated—thank you for doing that. I know each of them will treasure your writings, as will I.
It was an honor to play a small part in her Ramadan festivities.
